The best alternative and chill Greek islands to consider for destination weddings; From a Greece wedding photographer

I have lost count of how many times engaged couples who are considering Greece for their destination wedding, have asked me for reccommendations of chill, alternative islands beyond Mykonos to consider for their intimate destination wedding.

Born and raised in Greece and always a summer soul, Greek summer is one of the things that I simply cannot live without.I try to visit at least 1-2 islands every year and it’s literally the best thing I can do for my happiness, mind and body. Salty and sun-kissed skin, freshly prepared delicious food with veggies and fruit that taste out of this world, the deafening sound of crickets, a hammock, a beach and a book (oh, and watermelon). If you’ve been to the Greek islands you know what I am talking about. I you haven’t, mark my words: the Greek summer is a bubble of magic that once you go in, you will forever be nostalgic about.

I’m an English & Portuguese speaker Greece wedding photographer, a local expert and during this time, I’ve lost count of how many friends and clients from the US, UK and Portugal have asked me for recommendations on which islands to visit in the summer. I’ve poured my heart and soul into creating the perfect island-hopping itineraries for each and every one of them, and I figured it’s finally time to summarise everything in one easy-to-share blog post!

Let’s dive right t in, I’ll introduce you to my favourite and alternative Greek islands to visit as a couple, say I do, or even get married at!

So, here are my top recommendations for chill Greek islands to visit if you’re looking for a greek summer destination for your intimate wedding that’s a little bit (or a lot!) more alternative than the usual staples of Mykonos and Santorini. (Though let’s be honest – Santorini still made the list. You simply can’t leave her out!)

Perfect Romantic Greek Island Hidden Gems; Dream Island Wedding

1.Amorgos

Starting off strong: Amorgos (aka, The Big Blue)

I’m so in love with this island that I don’t even know where to begin!

Getting to this Aegean gem there takes a bit of time – around 8 hours by ferry from Athens—but trust me, it’s 100% worth it. You can also fly into Santorini or Mykonos and catch a connecting ferry from there. The journey itself feels like the start of an adventure. Amorgos is all about unplugging from the noise of everyday life and reconnecting with nature, peace, and yourself. It’s all about embracing the slow living! :’)

This stunning Cycladic gem is known for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and serene vibe—ideal for couples or anyone craving a slower, more soulful escape.

Hike scenic trails, visit the breathtaking Hozoviotissa Monastery clinging to the cliffs, and wander through charming whitewashed villages that feel untouched by time. With fewer tourists and a more authentic pace, Amorgos is a dream for those seeking hidden beauty, traditional Greek hospitality, and unforgettable views of the Aegean.

Limnos/Lemnos: The perfect destination wedding island

 2.Lemnos (Or Limnos)

Escape the large tourists crowds by going to a less-known island like Lemnos

Lemnos is a unique Greek island that offers a peaceful and authentic escape, perfect for couples who enjoy nature, history, and local culture. With its quiet, unspoiled beaches, traditional villages, and welcoming atmosphere, it’s an ideal spot to unwind and explore at your own pace.

From the wild landscapes and ancient ruins to fresh seafood tavernas by the sea, Lemnos offers a refreshing alternative to more touristy islands. Whether you’re into laid-back beach days or discovering hidden trails and castles, this island has a little bit of everything. If you are looking for the perfect backdrop for unique wedding photos, Limnos might be the right choice for you.

3. Milos

Mark my words: EVERY-SINGLE-BEACH-IS-A-GEM!

Milos is the perfect destination for couples seeking an authentic and unforgettable escape. I have recommended this one to friends and clients over and over again and they all came back madly in love with Milos.

4. Syros

Syros is a vibrant island that blends rich history, stunning architecture, and a lively cultural scene, making it a fantastic destination for couples seeking a mix of relaxation and exploration. The island’s capital, Ermoupoli, is known for its neoclassical buildings, picturesque squares, and charming alleys, offering a taste of both Greek and Venetian heritage.

5. Chios

Far less cosmopolitan and geographically quite remote from other known islands, Chios combines rich history, stunning landscapes, and unique cultural experiences, making it an ideal destination for couples seeking something off the beaten path.

Known for its medieval villages, such as Mesta and Pyrgi, where intricate designs cover the facades of homes, Chios offers a deep dive into Greek tradition. The island’s beautiful beaches and its fragrant mastic groves create a perfect backdrop for relaxation and exploration. Whether you’re discovering ancient ruins, wandering through charming villages, or tasting local delicacies, Chios is an unforgettable and authentic getaway.

My pro tip: Stay at Louiza Apartments, the most relaxing (and quite lonely and isolating) getaway with an almost private beach and chill beach bar.

6. Santorini

Santorini could simply not be missing from this list; even though it’s one of the most touristic islands in the world, Santorini is so popular for a reason: its unparalleled beauty and unique landscape. With its dramatic caldera views, whitewashed buildings perched on cliff edges, and crystal-clear waters, the island offers a breathtaking setting like no other.

Beyond the iconic sunsets, Santorini offers charming villages, ancient ruins, and beaches with volcanic sand. The island’s fine dining, boutique hotels, and vibrant culture make it a perfect destination for couples seeking luxury, adventure, and unforgettable memories.

My pro tips when organising a destination wedding in Santorini:

  • Visit off season (May-June or September-October), the weather is still wonderful (usually) but there are far less tourists than in peak middle summer time.
  • Watch the sunset from a more remote place like the Akrotiri Lighthouse on the south of the island.
  • For stunning pictures of the view, go early in the morning to avoid large crowds in the streets.
  • Last but not least – go to “Tranquilo Beach Bar on the south of the island for a really chill experience and delicious local food (not fancy!)
